When it comes to travelling around the UK in a motorhome, one of the most common questions motorhome owners and renters ask is, where can I park overnight? While the freedom to roam and explore the beautiful countryside is one of the best aspects, finding a safe and legal place to park for the night is important. The rules vary depending on where you are in the UK and knowing where you can and can't park is essential for avoiding fines and ensuring a peaceful night’s sleep.
In this guide, we'll cover the best places to park a motorhome overnight, including official campsites, wild camping, and alternative options like pub stopovers and supermarket car parks.
There are multiple places you can park your motorhome; this includes:
Campsites—The UK has a wide range of campsites that are usually designed to meet the needs of your motorhome, like electric hookups, water supplies, and waste disposal points. However, campsites do cost money, so if you are looking for somewhere to park for free, this may not be the best option.
Public Car Parks—Some public car parks allow overnight parking for campervans, motorhomes, and caravans, but it is important to check the signs and make sure there are no restrictions. These car parks may charge a small overnight parking fee, but nothing too expensive. Make sure you do check the signs, though, and the car park doesn’t use an entry/exit barrier; otherwise, you will have no way out!
Private Land—In private car parks and other forms of private land, such as a pub car park, permission must be granted by the landowner before setting up base for the night.
Unfortunately, you cannot park your motorhome or campervan anywhere you choose. You might have good intentions when you park on a piece of land, thinking you'll leave it as you found it and it’s not affecting anyone, but you may restrict the landowner's access, causing them a lot of bother.
While there are no particular rules against sleeping in a motorhome on the road in the UK, it is generally not permitted. This is because local governments own roads and set their laws.
